RECIPE NO. 7: PERFECT BRAAIED STEAK, BAKED BUTTERNUT & GREEN SALAD WITH STRAWBERRIES + STRAWBERRY BALSAMIC VINAIGRETTE

RECIPE NO. 7 (16th June 2017)
THE MEAL: PERFECT BRAAIED STEAK, BAKED BUTTERNUT & GREEN SALAD WITH STRAWBERRIES + STRAWBERRY BALSAMIC VINAIGRETTE
WHO CHOSE IT: INGRID

Elizabeth’s side of the story:

Despite the last couple of months disorder with our  last minute meal choices and late blog posts, Ingrid started June with a bang: picking the meal before the month had even begun. We decided that the 16th June would be a convenient date for both of us. What Ingrid did not know was that our Dad would be arriving on the 9th and I would be arriving on the 14th. I could barely contain my excitement knowing what was to come.

The surprise worked out seamlessly and I’m pleased to announce that we were finally able to cook our first recipe together.

THE INGREDIENTS:

T- Bone steaks, salt, butternut, cream, milk, white onion soup ( which we swapped out for mushroom soup, as this isn’t easily found in the U.K: who knew?), strawberries, goats cheese, avocado and baby leafs.

THE METHOD:

The 16th June was a manic day with all the children in school and involved in numerous extra-mural activities and events on Friday afternoon. Somewhere in the rush of it all we dashed home to peel, slice and make the butternut bake. I’m overjoyed no-one one around to witness the catastrophic mess we created. Ingrid says that most of her blog recipes are just as messy as this one (which comes as a shock to me, as she is the cleanest and most organized person I know). We raced to watch the sports event and got to the butcher with only 10 minutes to spare before they closed.

The salad is simple. Slice, arrange and blend.
T-bone steaks didn’t need any preparation other than salt and a perfect braai ( thanks Walter!). The recipe explained very descriptively how to go about preparing the perfect braai, which I thought was unnecessary for “true” South Africans , but none the less I’m sure there are some who need the extra guidance ;-).

THE EXPERIENCE:

The steaks, butternut and salad were amazing. It was lovely to try a different combination of flavours to the usual braai ( potato bake, greek/garden salad).

Although I’m a foodie, and love most foods: my favourite part of this recipe was sharing it with my sister and the rest of my family.

It was the perfect evening: champagne, good food, great weather and exceptional company. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

THE COST:

This was a ridiculously expensive meal, however we were feeding 6 adults and 5 children. There was a LOT of meat and we got to enjoy some leftovers the following day. The big expense was the T-Bone steaks. The rest of the meal was relatively straight forward and inexpensive.

TOTAL: R2313.80 / £134.38

Ingrid’s side of the story:

Today is the first of July. The first day of a new month. A new month which means that yet again I am late with my blog. So despite starting June off with a bang, I am ending it rather badly and having Liz around, means she is giving me a good telling off, in person this time.

I absolutely loved this meal. I know that the company meant that even if we were eating beans on toast, it would have been brilliant. But it was really good. The baked butternut and strawberry salad were both lovely new additions to our frequent BBQs and since both my kids devoured it, this will certainly become new family favourite.
